Grosser Preis von Baden 2014
September 7, 2014 - 2,400 metres (1½ miles), 3yo and older, Iffezheim, Germany
Preview from September 5, 2014
The unbeaten three-year-old German Derby winner
Sea The Moon will face older opposition for the first time
at the 144th Grosse Preis von Baden on Sunday. Opponents from abroad will not turn up in Iffezheim, still the
participating German horses seem strong
enough to offer him a decent test for the upcoming Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
There were rumours about
Sea The Moon's physical condition the recent weeks.
Germany's currently most successful trainer Markus Klug
declared on Monday that Sea The Moon would not be on hundred percent yet,
that is was he should be at the Arc in October.
As world class jockey Christophe Soumillon is engaged in France on Sunday
Cristian Demuro will ride Sea The Moon in Iffezheim, where he will most likely
storm to the front of the field, like he did in his first four runs which he all won wire to wire.
Resistance could come from
Lucky Speed the winner of the
German Derby 2013,
who could not satisfy expectations this year yet after an almost one year long injury layoff.
The same is true for
Ivanhowe who had been top favourite in last year's German Derby where
he ended only as eighth due to an injury. He returned after ten month by winning the Gerling-Preis (Group 2),
but then disappointed in the Grand Prix de Chantilly in June and did not run since.
One of Germany's best three-year-olds is undoubtedly Andreas Löwe's
Lucky Lion.
He impressed not only in the Derby-trials, he also won the Grosse Dallmayr-Preis (Group 1) over 2,000 meters
in July ahead of the highly valued Noble Mission.
There are doubts about his stamina though, at the
German Derby 2014
he got beaten by Sea The Moon by eleven length over 2,400 meters.
With
Sirius Andreas Löwe has another powerful three-year-old at the start. He won the
Große Preis von Berlin (Group 1, 2,400m) ahead of
Berlin Berlin and Lucky Speed four weeks ago.
Andreas Wöhler supplemented
Terrubi who is reported to start in the Melbourne Cup in November.
The son of Dalakhani beat horses like Brown Panther, Going Somewhere or Seismos when won the
Prix Maurice de Nieuil over 2,800 meters in July.
Besides Ivanhowe Jean-Pierre Carvalho also nominated
Inicar. The son of Galileo only disappointed so far,
but he is known as a frontrunner and could fight for the lead with Sea The Moon, which would be an interesting
scenario.
All in all it must be said, if Sea The Moon, the current top favourite of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe,
cannot win the Grosse Preis von Baden on Sunday,
he will not have an easy time in Paris in October.
The Grosse Preis von Baden is the highest classified horse race in Germany, is was first run in 1858.
The winner automatically gets an invitation to the Breeders' Cup Turf and the
Japan Cup.
