2018 Prix du Jockey Club
June 3, 2018 - 2,100 meters, Chantilly, France
Preview: June 1, 2018
He won only two of his five starts, still
Olmedo is favourite
to win the French Derby in the betting market,
more than ever since he triumphed in the French 2000 Guineas recently.
However, Olmedo has not been truly convincing, why a whole pack of horses hopes to succeed
in the 2018 Prix du Jockey Club. Looks like an exciting race!
Olmedo has been favourite to win the Prix du Jockey Club at the bookmakers
most of the time,
his trainer Jean-Claude Rouget had always said he would be his best Derby horse in his the stable.
He did not get disappointed, his charge won the Poule d'Essai des Poulains (French 2000 Guineas) on May 13.
At this classic over a mile Olmedo made use of his dynamic late kick and
the son of Declaration Of War is expected to do even better with further distance.
Jean-Claude Rouget could win the Prix du Jockey Club the last two years with Almanzor and Brametot.
Study Of Man prevailed in one of the key trials for the Prix du Jockey Club,
defeated the highly valued Alounak and Alhadab in the Prix Greffulhe (G2, 2100 m) on May 8,
already came runner-up in the Prix la Force (Gr. 3, 1.800 m) on his seasonal debut.
He is a son of the Japanese star sire Deep Impact,
his mother Second Happiness is a daughter of the ten times Group 1 winning Miesque.
Study Of Man is trained in Chantilly by Pascal Bary,
who won the 'Derby francais' five times.
Key Victory is an unbeaten colt from the Godolpin stable,
who won a Listed race on deep ground in Newmarket on May 5.
His trainer Charlie Appleby said afterwards, he had always felt that Key Victory is a 2000 meter horse
and that the Prix du Jockey Club will suit him.
The son of Teofilo has run just two races in his young career though.
Rostropovich had been clearly beaten by Olmedo in the Prix de Fontainebleau on heavy gound earlier this year,
but then won the Dee Stakes at Chester (Listed, 2076 m) on good ground with almost four length,
why bookmakers now have the son of Frankel among the top horses for the Prix du Jockey Club.
Rostropovich would be the first winner for Aidan O’Brien in the Prix du Jockey Club,
he will be ridden by Ryan Moore.
Hey Gaman lost to Olmedo in the French 2.000 Guineas only by a head,
he had become a narrowly beaten runner-up already in the Champagne Stakes (G2, 1414 m) last year.
The son of New Approach, who is trained by James Tate in Newmarket, has the experience of nine starts.
Dice Roll finished less than half a length behind Olmedo in the French 2000 Guineas,
he is obviously among the candidates for the Prix du Jockey Club.
He has won four of his six starts and impressed with a five-length victory
on his seasonal debut in the Prix Djebel (G3, 1400 m) on heavy ground.
His father Showcasing is rather known for sprinters,
but Dice Roll's Parisian-based Italian owner Giacomo Algranti
thinks that he will get the Jockey Club distance.
Soft ground would probably increase his chances.
Christophe Soumillon will be his jockey.
Intellogent, like Dice Roll, is trained by Fabrice Chappet in Chantilly.
There he won the Prix de Guiché (G3, 1800 m) on May 7,
fifteen times this race has produced the later winner of the Prix du Jockey Club.
Intellogent was sold to Fiona Carmichael for 320,000 Euros at the Arqana Yearling Sale in 2016
and was the first Group winner for his father Intello (Galileo),
who had won the Prix du Jockey Club back in 2013.
Naturally High is another colt who is trained in Chantilly.
The Pascal Bary charge won both starts this year,
most recently the Prix de Suresne (Listed, 2000 m) in Longchamp.
The son of Camelot has a strong turn of foot and should not be underestimated
in a fast run race.
Pharrell is Jean-Claude Rouget's second colt in the 2018 Prix du Jockey Club.
The son of Manduro landed the important Derby trial Prix Noailles (G3, 2100 m) on April 15,
where he fought down Alhabab and
Flag Of Honour.
It was his first and only start this year for Pharrell, who had been bought for only 15,000 Euro.
Aidan O’Brien has three more colts in the Prix du Jockey Club besides Rostropovich.
the son of Camelot
Hunting Horn and
Flag Of Honour
finished third and fifth in the Chester Vase Stakes on May 9, quite well beaten.
Kenya, like Flag Of Honour a son of Galileo,
was last in the Dee Stakes won by Rostropovich.
However, we all know, never underestimate a horse entered by Aidan O’Brien.
